We're happy to report that Line Rider 2 has one of the best soundtracks we've ever heard on the DS. Of course, the game isn't finished, yet, so hopefully inXile is still tweaking the interface. Since this is the crux of what Line Rider 2 is all about, it worries us a bit that editing isn't as easy as it should be. It's usually easier and faster to just erase a line and draw it again. Or a curve point will be hidden behind a foreground object so we can't find it. But, in our preview build, sometimes the tool won't grab our line. There is a "grab" tool that can be used to either move an entire line or adjust its curve. It's when you want to edit them that frustration can set in. The resulting product looks a bit more generic than the etch-a-sketchish original, but it will likely appeal to the younger demographic. No longer a black and white affair, the DS game has a colorful, cartoonish look and the designers have tried to flesh out the hero and protagonist with animated cut scenes. The look of Line Rider has changed drastically. Your work area is thankfully clean and uncluttered.

You select drawing tools in the bottom left corner, the "play" button is on the bottom right when you're ready to let Bosh loose, and you access the menu in the upper right. You can zoom in and out with the Y and A buttons, but even zoomed all the out you can only see a small portion of the run. Your work is done on the bottom screen while the top provides a not-too-detailed map of the level. Early on the game provides helpful hints, but quickly (perhaps too quickly) you'll be on your own.

The process involves a lot of trial and error - you draw a bit, Bosh makes it a little farther, and you refine your design. There are several targets that have to be hit along the way. Also, it's not enough to make it across the finish line. Sometimes you'll need to control his speed with "speed up" or "slow down" lines. It's not as simple as just connecting point A to point B. That's where you come in - you must use the stylus to draw a variety of different lines and see Bosh to safety. The problem is, there are gaps in the road that need to be filled in or else Bosh (our hero) will fall to his doom. Here, instead of the freeform art projects of the original Rider, the player is given start and finish lines. Line Rider 2 does have a lot more structure and an objective-based story mode to work through. Of course, DS and Wii games aren't free, so developer inXile would have to provide more content to justify a purchase. In December of 2006 it was announced the "toy" would be brought to the Nintendo DS and Wii. It quickly became an online phenomenon and a cult following of Line Riders drew thousands of sled courses and uploaded videos to YouTube. Line Rider was released as a gratis Internet application for doodling snow slopes back in 2006.

It's always dangerous taking something free and asking people to pay money for it.
